Midsummer Musings

The Sun is warmth, light, life. My garden grows, flowers bloom, their sweet scents fill the air. Birds sing their joy and laughter. It is summer!

Here in this temperate climate, not the desert of my recent past, the sun is welcome and life-giving—the threat of its excess left behind in that other place. I am back where I began, where the seasonal celebrations I have learned and love make sense and resonate with what is occurring around me.

I welcome the light, no longer afraid to embrace the Sun and worsen that threat. With the embrace, Sunna speaks: she is kind, gentle, yet firm, reminding me that I have found purpose, a direction to begin anew. Slow progress is all that I need, but I must pick up that pace enough that I notice—read a page (or more), meditate and journal, cook with intention. Daily small things so I know that I am finding my way.

This passage is such a lovely reflection on embracing the warmth and renewal that the sun brings. The imagery of the garden, blooming flowers, and birds singing feels so vivid and alive. It’s interesting how the author contrasts their experience with the desert, where the sun felt like a threat, to this temperate climate where it feels life-giving. The idea of Sunna speaking as a kind yet firm guide adds a mystical, almost personal connection to the natural world. I wonder if the author has always felt this way about the sun or if it’s something they’ve come to appreciate over time. The focus on slow progress and daily intentional actions is inspiring—do you think this approach could work for anyone, or does it require a specific mindset?

I don’t think I truly appreciated the sun until I had lived for many years in the desert, with nine months of summer. After moving northward again, the longer, warmer days are the growing season for flowers and other plants. Having grown up in a similar climate as a child, this resonates better with my spirit.
As for slow progress and daily intentional actions, I think these can help anyone to focus on their goals, whether spiritual or other. When work-life balance is tipped, I have found it especially helpful to regaining my eqilibrium.
